Double Feature: AMZN’s Web Services + Google Android

Didn’t even break a sweat on these two … too short … here was the skinny:

  • He really didn’t say much that hadn’t been already heard.
1. Why are they succeeding — AMZN is Selling Their Dog Food

  • AMZN’s AWS offer started 4 years ago when they used a services style to seperate their network and applications team. In doing so, they realized the services they had seperated could be (w/ some tweaks) exposed out to customers as well and sold SaaS style.
  • So if you could start a business based on the streamlined systems of AMZN … but with the option to take it on piece by piece … as in service by service …  we are talking about things like ‘add customer’ … plus the power of full app when needed … wouldn’t you?

2. The Best Is Yet To Come

  • Bezo’s dodged this question simply referring to a new release of S3 allowing persistent storage. However, long term, if you look at their services in private beta you see a much broader picture. Payment solutions, eCommerce stacks, Fulfillment systems. Again, one would assume it would be service based … meaning you don’t buy an application (you get one but that isn’t where it ends). Instead, you also can extend that set of services w/ local customizations.

Interesting … but nothing groundbreaking … having a bit more time …. I wandered over to Google.

  • Probably better off reading a blog. No notable points for the causal reader.
1. Can an OEM and/or telco create a marketing bundle that isn’t hacked?

  • They were asked this question but skipped it. However there is meat behind this point. Google Android will have a huge development community. Odds of teleco’s being able to protect their holy ground (bandwidth, applications that are allowed on the device) are low. This could be an interesting problem for Android Developers. Telephone providers may have heart burn after people start running Andoid phones that are streaming movies from Netflix for example.
  • Time will tell

Another snoozer.

The biggest lesson from these two … I shouldn’t of strayed from my rule that it has to be a presentation or a high end interview. Adhoc interviews (both of these) are more ‘hit-n-miss’ in revelations or insights. People take more time preparing for conferences. Quality of content is better.

Eric Schmidt (IBM Partner Conf): IBM … I Love You

As I watched Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, speak on this webcast visions of Barney (the dinosaur version of Mr. Rogers) singing I Love You, You Love Me, We’re A Happy Family kept running through my head. So much stroking was going on between IBM and Google I couldn’t tell who was courting who.

Amused and curious on what this relationship was all about, I hit slapped on the headsets and started to listen.

  • Really it was only interesting relative to the dynamic of the interchange between Schmidt and Palminsano. Otherwise they didn’t reveal much you don’t know or hadn’t thought about.
1. Why the is Google Ga Ga over IBM? IBM Knows Cloud Computing

  • The first chorus of “I Love You” was when Eric gushing how IBM knew Cloud Computing better than Google. This ‘back patting’ continued for quite some time. You would think he was at an IBM conference or something. Isn’t it strange that Google, who is perceived as the champion of the little guy, is now teaming up with the Goliath of Goliaths? It is to me. Heck, at one point Eric pretended not to know why IBM was giving so much $ to universities. Come on Eric. You know. Just ask your Board Member Steve Jobs … you win the minds in the university … you lock up the next generation.

2. Cloud Computing Is About Removing The Middleman … (just not IBM or Google please)

  • This was mentioned a few times in the keynote and the Q&A. In all cases, I think Google and IBM skipped over the implications Cloud Computing had on their businesses (relative to removing them as middlemen). Not surprising, but that is the question many people should be pondering.

3. Sam was asked, whats the barrier to adoption on cloud computing …. no answer

  • He went off and answered something else (in the Q&A). From my view this is a riddle for any centralized model (including cloud computing). Who builds or brokers a trusted relationship w/ the IT Stakeholder that could champion such a change event in an org. We aren’t talking about if IM should be allowed here. We are talking about outsourcing a large chunk of the IT skill set in an organization.

4. Eric Schmidt Channels Howard Hughes — Use Your Products

  • Schmidt talked about how you have to use the products you are trying to sell for your business to truly understand its flaws and strengths. Hughes was the same way w/ his business (going under cover in many cases to do various roles in his org).

I could go on but this webcast was full of fluffy thoughts that didn’t always jive so well together or were overly oiled. I was hoping for more of a detail analysis of their current product stack in the cloud space. Oh well, perhaps next time.

For those not tracking the geek world, David Heinemeier Hansson is a rather successful coder that built some well adopted apps (e.g. Backpack) and a framework that got some people excited about its ease (Ruby on Rails).

O.k. So what …

Well, DHH went on a rant about how the new business model of FREE that everyone is jumping up and down about. Specifically saying how it was nuts. In his view, “real” business startups (not those looking to get bought by some big fish) should focus on bringing value that customers pay for … not how they can be free and gain adoption from that.

Novel thought … but why is he pointing this out?

  • DHH always does a good job w/ slide structure and making the flow of his points (with a bit of shock jock foul mouth thown in). Worth the listen just for that.
1. Free. Fee. Why should you care?

  • David points out an interesting trend in industry. The movement toward free. Recently there was a hoo hah when Google offered an application for free that was just like one David’s company sells on a per month basis called Campfire. I guess that got David thinking about this free versus fee model. You should care because anything you do for free could be the next ‘free’ offering from one of the big boys. What to do?

2. What can you do? Nothing.

  • Momentum is just increasing for free services. The bar only gets lower now that Amazon is offering a cheap hosting model via AWS and Google is offering the free Google App Engine. If you can host and scale for pennies on the dollar … you can’t count on infrastructure for a barrier to entry.

3. O.k. I lied. David Pointed Out Niche As The Answer.

  • David’s solution was focusing on a niche product that you sign a set of dedicated enterprise (not consumer, too fickle) clients to for monthly / yearly offerings. Free solutions will come but will struggle to get marketing to the niche. Its the broadly consumed offerings that will have to fight potentially face pressure on the ‘free’ front consistently.

In summary, gotta give hops to DHH for pointing out the frenzy in business today to launch businesses based on models that are not clear (just build membership) especially in a setting where VC’s are presenting before him. I think he is right to call for a refocus at the individual level especially as he talked about focusing on a niche and delivering to that niche. Much like the line Security through Obscurity … you can protect your business concept by starting small in niche markets. If you go after the mega models (like the next FriendFeed … you have big fish to swim with and will likely get eaten).

Social Networks: The New Age Drug Dealers?

Social networks want to portray themselves as your friend in ‘discovery’. Your wingman in serendipity. However, aren’t they really more like new age Drug Dealers? I say that because all of their models for making money from their service (ads) incent them to create addicts. So, in their view, a daily touch isn’t enough. Forget that. How about hourly? Minute to minute? Ok. Maybe I am being a bit harsh. I got this idea as I watched this presentation from the Graphing Social Patterns (GSP) conference in March. I initially was intrigued because it was a panel of faces I knew and some I didn’t on an area that ties to my thoughts as of late. As usual my raw notes are below, but here are the thoughts that jumped out at me as I ran (i.e. jogged) along.

  • Their back and forth banter was interesting enough but the notable insights that were new (to me) were limited.
1. Boiling Down the Mess of the Mass

  • They made a comment something to this effect early on. Basically that the masses all have an activity stream of shares, posts, etc … but if you try to look at it just few one let alone a few of your friends it becomes a mess of sites, logins, etc. Their goal is to unify that to one UI. So its still a bit of a mess … but one mess. Like your kids room that you wander into only for amusement every now and then.

2. Move from organization by friend, topic … to topic, friend

  • They talked about how they needed to boil universal streams of activity and thought to common topics (a photo, a post, a product, etc). Then show people this from that view. Really that isn’t that insightful given TechMeme kinda does it for blogs already. However for companies it is interesting if they are thinking about collaboration models (a nuance of design people might miss).

3. Then I Had the Drug Dealer Perception (Google starts it, FriendFeed pushes back)

  • So there was a brief exchange between Bret and Kevin around Monetization models. Of course that is all Ad based. Kevin (Google) pushed out that the framework (Google) should enable relevant ads to the stream (top down, drug lord). While Bret countered the users that own the stream should control what ads come in if not select them by the very post they do (some of that my expansion of his comment).

4. Niche Feeds, Niche Example for Drug Lord Case

  • At the end there was a question from the audience around how they enable niche consumers so they can get the feed of posts they want (minority) and not ones they don’t (majority). Subscribing to 10,000 feeds each picking a tag or sub-category group off reader XYZ isn’t viable. Which got me thinking, isn’t the real issue that niche consumers feel is that off-topic chatter comes/interrupts too often. However, if the social networks moved to a less frequent (daily/weekly?) interruption style with organization styles ala TechMeme and FriendFeed the human at the other end could scan the net activity and hit what interested them. Why isn’t this model being pursued heavily? It seems some are (e.g. Feedburner’s weekly feed promise for this year and FriendFeed). I believe some of the lack of focus on less frequent design puzzles is because most Social Networks make money on attention and interaction. If they focused on a model that was more efficient for you … they might only pull you in for 1/10 of the ad views. Amusing. If I am right (one could debate my premise, granted), I think they are being short sighted. Not catering to the Niche AND infrequent consumer is not catering to the majority consumer. Most people are infrequent consumers of blogs. They try em out and then stop due to the feeling of being spammed (via friends or not).

Basically it boils down to insight that the social networks aren’t enabling true usability on average in the use case of searching for insight. They are really focused on a use case that maximizes views and interaction. At least most of them are. Google App Engine - “Me Too” or “Game Changer”

On first blush Google App Engine (released to 10,000 developers yesterday) seems to be just another entry into scalable computing. But on further review there is quite a bit being introduced here that is notably different than the offerings of the early leaders of this space.

You can read the running thoughts at the bottom but here are my initial thoughts on what is unique on this offering when compared to other virtual computing plays.

  • Part II (1st demo) was the best to see the power plus Part III to get a sense of the 5 part stack they are offering.
1. Nothings Free … But This Is Close

  • Basically, they are offering a free, hosted code driven website with a database (based on BigTable). The hidden cost is you have to write it in python right now. Hrmm … free … python … free … python. I don’t know python but I think I could learn python for this payback.

2. Ready to Sign? Too late. Sold Out. For now.

  • The 10,000 slots for the beta program are full as of this morning. But feel free to register to get notice when the open it up for pre-release (what ever happened to the word ‘beta’ … is that cliche now?).

3. No More Database. You Ruby On Rails people should dig that.

  • The Ruby on Rails posse has been big into defining tables via migrations so you can control the database version with the code version. Google takes it one step further. There is no database. Its just code classes interacting with Big Table. Is this the return of VSAM on steroids? Is the elegance of complex joins going out the window with this for something more old school (hello synch sort). Still, I think I like it.

4. Don’t Like Creating User Management Logic … Google Accounts

  • Looks like everyone is trying to get you to put your users in their user management model. If someone would say they support OpenID both ways I might listen.

5. Isn’t Virtual Server Images Better?

  • If AMZN is willing to provide (or working to provide) customers with on the fly allocated images of various server configurations they have or the customer creates isn’t that going to be more compelling? A setup where you can pick from a library of image configurations with all the stuff pre-loaded? When under load, spin up extra ’slices’ of that same image. Using all your stuff (not the limits of what google offers).

So at first blush, for rapid prototyping or throw away apps this looks pretty good. But for large scale computing in the cloud I think I will still look for setups where I can host my images (like IBM, AMZN, and MSFT seem to be pondering).
